The World Of Warcraft Shaman can be a very commanding class if it is played the right way. Despite not being particularly dominant as antagonists or as spell casters, they are an integral member of any group and their skills are incredibly beneficial. Although considered to be a middle of the road class, it could be worth investing time to give this a try.

An essential piece of information to take note of before you begin as a Shaman is that your own skills are able to combine well with this class and you are able to integrate well with this group. Individually they are not very powerful but as a group they are a force to be reckoned with - their skills are very affective in strengthening the group.

Getting started as a Shaman

On selecting this class there will be many restrictions on your character that you are allowed to play. For the Allience only the Dranei can be Shamans. Hordes are limited to Orc, Trolls, the Undead or Tauren. At first they will have some weak points but become beneficial in the long run.

It is essential that you learn to use your mana in the correct way. Using too much too soon will mean spending much time trying to regenerate else your health will decrease rapidly. Like most classes that deal more in spells and potions than actual physical battle finding a balance with your mana is crucial.

Shamans are especially adept in the area of healing spells and you need to spend time focusing on building your knowledge in this area as this class will not have much success with melee fighting. Gathering as many healing spells for protection can be as important as building an effective weaponry arsenal.

This class will excel with learning about herbalism and enchanting. Potion making is without doubt a skill you need to master to become a professional Shaman. Potions are always of high demand and can be particularly useful on yourself. Ultimately creating powerful potions and spells will earn you more money and acclaim.

Don't focus on physical professions such as leatherwork or skills of a blacksmith.
Skinning may be more useful. Note that leather armour is not expensive to purchase and will only get you as far as level 40. Quests along the way can earn you armour as rewards. If you wish to take a little time away from your game, try mining as a secondary profession. You can make use of the items you find.

Totems

After you finish specific quest, you get rewarded with Totems. These are assigned by elements, and you can have a totem for each element at any one time. The Totems are only available for the Shaman class and are carried around much the way a flag carrier does, and is a great way to make use of mana and cast time, and can be used a variety of ways. For instance, Earth Totem will help defend members of the group. The Fire Totem is offensive and great to be used in battles, whilst the water Totem is used for restoration. Once you reach higher levels in the game, you can look at acquiring the Air Totem which has superb defensive capabilities.

A little word of warning. If you drop a Totem intentionally or accidently, you cannot pick that Totem up again. Therefore use with care.

Leveling higher in the Shaman Class

Shaman's are by nature not a front line class. They don't have the potential to up their melee or battle skills (would certainly be a formidable class if they could!) which means you will have to concentrate on what Shamans are made for. Which focuses on brain power and spells. If you are getting fed up of front line fighting, Shaman's can be a very fun class to play.

Remember to use everything at your disposal to your advantage. That is the one key aspect to remember. Use Totems whenever possible. Choose the correct type element to match your situation. Your group will certainly thank you for the benefits you bring to the party.

It can be a challenge for you to accomplish the same results using different means. For instance, you will look at more means to forge relationships with others, engage more in spells and brain power rather than the usual hack ‘n' slash. The Shaman class definitely adds an element of satisfaction above others once you master the class, and are able attain high levels. It probably isn't the first class you should start of with, but certainly give it a go having tried out other classes. You won't regret it.
